Terra Tek site now live

Stream Media were approached by Terra Tek and asked to build a professional site that looked clean, easy to navigate and more importantly it could be updated by the Terra Tek staff.

The site is build uses WordPress as a CMS that allows staff to update it. Most elements of the site can be edited. This can include the menu system, header graphics and of course the content.

Raeburn Geothermal now live

Stream Media were approached by Raeburn Geothermal and asked to build a professional site that looked clean, easy to navigate and more importantly it could be updated by the Raeburn Geothermal staff.

The site is build uses WordPress as the CMS that allows staff to update it. Most elements of the site can be edited. This can include the menu system, header graphics and of course the content.

Geothermal is a form of renewable energy which involves extracting heat from the earth’s natural resources. Raeburn Drilling & Geotechnical Ltd have tackled some of the largest geothermal developments throughout the U.K and are at the forefront of this new market.

Vets Now Referrals go live

This was quite a tricky breif. They wanted the ability to add new locations to the site. This meant complete structural changes to the site, but we managed it and staff at Vets Now found the whole process of updating the site a total breeze. Here is some of the feedback we got:

I am currently working with a new client who have asked me to develop template designs for their CMS system. This is fantastic and I am really enjoying the creative process of the design. The problem? Well their CMS system was built back in 2004 and works perfectly in IE6 and then falls apart on any browser above that.

This has proved a major challenge for me as I have to hold back on my design ideas as anything too complex is causing their system to break. For example I have a maximum width of 770px to play with and I can only put an image in the header area.

This means I have had to develop a number of tricks and cheats within the design in Fireworks to create a website that looks far more professional than their system can handle. Its quite strange using graphical cheats instead of CSS based cheats to get the design you want. Back to the olden days!

Hopefully their system will be updated soon and then I can let my creative juices really flow. Until then I am going to be knee deep in Firework layers.

Is art direction the new direction?

Art direction is a new craze that is hitting the Internet at the moment. It’s bascially the process of creating an individual design for each page or post on your website instead of working to a generic template. With the introduction of much more flexible CSS within browsers, HTML5 and applications such as Typekit and Cufon it has become much easier to create the exact look you want for your post.

I have been experimenting with art direction for a while now on my own personal blog and as much as its been fun I have found it quite difficult to master the whole effect via WordPress.

I feel as the Internet develop and speeds become faster we will find even more sites using this method to display their information. Not only is it much more engaging that the usual ‘template’ design but it also gets across the message of your page or post far better.

Some websites currently using this technique at the moment are listed below:

Greg Wood – Designer at Erskine who’s own personal website is a constant source of inspiration.
Paravel - These guys have been doing this great idea called ‘The many faces off‘ its really well done.
Jason Santa Maria – This guy started it all and his website is an excellent source of information

We might even consider turing the Stream Media blog into an art direction experiment. Watch this space!
